Answer:

B) Double refraction

Explanation:

A Nicol prism is a type of polarizer, or an optical device constituted from the calcite crystal that is used to produce and analyze the plane polarized light.

When an ordinary ray of light passes through a calcite crystal, it is broken up into two rays:. The oridnary ray and the extraordinary ray.

The ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray. The ordinary ray is polarized and has vibrations that are perpendicular to the principle section of the crystal. Whereas the polarized extraordinary ray has its vibration parallel to the principle section. If one of the two rays are eliminated by an optical method, then the ray emerging through the crystal will be plane polarized. Thus, the nicol prism is based on the concept of double refraction.
