An anion is an atom or a group of atoms bearing one or more negative electric charges .It is known that non metal like nitrogen have 7 atomic number..so it can gain 3 electron to complete octet .so when an element gains electron it charges become negative ..therefore a non metal gains electron to form anions...

Electrons are negatively charged particles.
If an element loose an ion ,then it form cations.
And,. If an element gain an ion , then it form anions for completing their octet.
so ,if non - metals gains electrons from a metal it means that it requires that ion or ions to complete it's octave or valence shell
