A number 16 is divided into two  parts,  one of them being three times the other. Find the larger part.​

let the 2 parts be x and 16-x

16-x = 3x (one of them is 3 times the other)

16 = 4x (transpose -x to RHS)

=> x = 16/4

=> x = 4

therefore the 2 parts are

x = 4 (substituting the valur of x found)

16-x = 16-4 (substituting the valur of x found)

= 12

Therefore the 2 parts are 12 and 4

Hence the larger part is 12
