Let the numebr be x.

other number = x +3

According to question

x(x+3) = 40

+3x = 40

+ 3x -40 = 0

+ 8x -5x -40 =0

x(x+8) -5(x +8) = 0

x-5 = 0. and x + 8 = 0

x =5 and x = -8
