(x + 12) + x = 72
or, 2x =72-12
or x = 60/2 =30
hence the numbers are 30 and (30+12) = 42

Let a be one number

Then a + 12 be another number

Then a+a+12 = 72 be the sum.

          2a +12 =72

          2a = 72 - 12

          a = 30

So, the numbers are 30 and 30 + 12 = 42
