Let the other number = 2x - 3

 

Set up equation.

 

[x + (2x - 3)] + 2 = 8

 

[x + 2x - 3] + 2 = 8

 

3x - 1 = 8

3x = 9

  x = 3

or,
x+y+7 = 37
then,
x+y =37-7
x+y=30
(2y-3)+y=30
3y-3=30
3y = 30+3
