let the value by which the number is greater than 35 or less than 53 = x

Number = 35 + x or 53 - x

35 + x = 53 - x
2x = 53 - 35
2x = 18
x = 18/2 = 9 .

Now, The number = 35 + 9 = 53 -9 = 44 .
