Step-by-step explanation:

Let the number be x.

Then, according to question,

x - 84 = 108 - x

2x = 192

x = 96

Alternate way :

The question actually means that the number lies the middle of 84 and 108.

84 < x < 108

So directly you can find out as,

(84 + 108)/2

= 192/2

= 96

Given:

  1. A number.
  2. When the number is subtracted from 84 it gives a difference which is same as the difference when the number is subtracted from 108.

Find:

The Number.

Solution:

Let's denote the number with the variable x.

From what is given, we can obtain 2 valid expressions and equate them to obtain our answer.

Expression 1:

x - 84.

Expression 2:

108 - x.

  • We know that, the value of both the expressions is the same. So, we can equate expression 1 and 2 and the find the value of x ,i.e, the unknown number.

Equating Expression 1 and Expression 2:

x - 84 = 108 - x.

x + x = 108 + 84 [Transposing like terms to perform operations on them].

2x = 192.

x = 192/2.

x = 96.

Therefore, the unknown number x is 96.

Let's check if our number matches with the expression:

Substituting the value of x in the equation:

x - 84 = 108 - x.

96 - 84 = 108 - 96.

12 = 12.

So, our value of the number is right.
