let the numbers be a and b

a = 2b      ---------------------- (1)

50-a = 2+(40-b)

50 - a - 2 =40 - b

48 - a = 40 - b

48 - 40 - a = -b

8 - a = -b

In the equation (1) , we have a = 2b

8-2b+b=0

8-b=0

b=8

substiture b = 8 in (1) we get

a = 2 * 8

    = 16.

Hope this helps!
