Let the number be x.
Therefore , According to the question when we form equation , we get -
x + x/2 = 72
or, (2x+x)/2 = 72
or, 3x/2 = 72
or, 3x = 144
or, x = 144/3
or, x = 48
Proof -
48+(48/2) = 48+24=72.
Answer- 48 when added to its half gives 72.
Therefore , According to the question when we form equation , we get -

Let us consider the unkown number as x
72= x + x/2
72= 2x/2 + x/2
72 = 3x/2
72 ÷ 3 = x/2
24 × 2 = x
48 = x
If 48 is added to its half the result will be 72
