Given:

incidence angle i = 30°

width of incident beam w_i = 3 m

To find:

the width of the refracted beam w_r =?

Step-to-step-explanation:

  • The beam of light is incident on the surface of a parallel beam. It makes an angle of 30° with a beam.

        i.e. i = 90° - 30° = 60°

  • The angle of incidence & angle of refraction is complementary.

         i + r =90°

         60° + r = 90°

         r = 30°

  • we know that,

          \displaystyle \frac{W_i}{W_r}=\frac{cos\  i}{cos\ r}

         \displaystyle \frac{3}{W_r}=\frac{cos\  60}{cos\ 30}

w_r = 5.1961 m

  • The width of the refracted beam is 5.1961 m.
