Elephantitis, which is scientifically known  as Lymphatic filariasis, are caused in humans by parasitic worms called filarial worms.

Explanation:

  • This condition causes enlargement and stiffening of the lower limbs, breasts and genitals. The skin becomes thicker and the condition is painful. The disease is spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes.
  • There are three types of worms that are known to cause this disease. They are Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori. W. bancrofti being the most common.  
  • The parasitic worm Wuchereria bancrofti belongs to phylum nematoda.
