Given:

Total number of marked fished = 400

Total number of catch = 60 fishes or which 3 are marked.

To Find:

Estimate the number of fish in the lake

Explanation:

The 3 marked fish in 60 fish tell us that for every 60 fish that is caught, there will be 3 marked fish. This number will increase proportionally as the number of fish caught. So we find out how many fish will there be if all the 400 marked fish are caught.

Solution:

Ratio of marked fish : total fish  = 3 : 60

Estimated total number of fish = (400 ÷ 3) x 60

Estimated total number of fish = 8000

Answer: The number of fish in the lake is estimated to be about 8000
