A particle is moving in a circle with uniform speed v. in moving from one point to another diametrically opposite point the mangnitude if change in momentum is 2mv ( Option 2 is the correct answer)

  • The particle's velocity is the same at diametrically opposed places, but in the opposite direction.
  • Assume that a particle of mass m is travelling in an anticlockwise direction, and that A and b are diametrically opposed positions.
  • Now we have initial momentum of the particle at A is P= mv
  • and the final momentum of the particle at B is F= -mv
  • Moment um change is = ( F- P) = (- mv- mv) = -2mv
  • Also We know the, Initial kinetic energy = ½mv² and Final kinetic energy = ½mv²
  • So kinetic energy change = (½mv²-½mv²) = 0
  • Momentum changes by 2mv in magnitude but kinetic energy remains same.

Hence, Momentum changes by 2mv in magnitude but kinetic energy remains same.
