Displacement of the particle is 0 and the distance traveled by the particle is 50m.

Given :

  • The particle covers 25m in the forward direction.
  • It returns back to its origin.

To find :

(a) Displacement of the particle

(b) Distance traveled by the particle

Solution :

(a) Displacement of the particle:

  • In the case of displacement, the direction, and path (shortest path) taken by the particle are considered.
  • Displacement is the difference between the final position and the initial position of the particle.
  • Here the particle's initial and final position is the same, it is the origin.

               Therefore displacement = (+25 )+ (-25m)

                                                          = 25m - 25m = 0

(b) Distance traveled by the particle:

  • Neither the direction nor the shortest path is considered in the case of distance.
  • Distance is the sum total of the path traveled by the particle.
  • Here, the particle starts from the origin, covers 25m, and then travels 25m back along this same path to reach the origin.

             Hence total distance = 25m + 25m = 50m.
