Given: Mass of 6 kg at origin and another mass of 0.4 kg at distance of 8 m from origin on X- axis.

To find: distance of centre of mass from origin

Solution: The formula used for calculating centre of mass is

 \frac{m1x1 + m2x2}{m1 + m2}

where m1= mass of first body= 6 kg

m2= mass of second body= 0.4 kg

x1= distance of first body with respect to

origin= 0 m

x2=distance of second body with respect

to origin= 8m

Using formula, distance of centre of mass from origin = (6*0 + 0.4*8)/ 6+0.4

= 3.2/6.4

= 0.5 m

Therefore, the distance of centre of mass from origin is 0.5 m.
