A particle travels at a constant velocity of 3ms–1 for 20s. Then it stops for 10s before completing

its journey in another 30s at a constant velocity of 2 ms–1. Its average velocity for the whole

journey is [ ]

a) 2 ms–1 b) 2.4 ms–1 c) 2.7 ms–1 d) 3 ms–1

Given :

Velocity fot first 20 sec = 3m/s

Velocity fot another 30 sec = 2m/s

To find :

Average velocity for the whole journey = ?

Solution :

  • Distance travelled in first 20 sec

        Distance = speed × Time

                    = 20 × 3

                    = 60m

  • Distance travelled in another 30 sec

        Distance = speed × Time

                    = 30 × 2

                    = 60m

  • Average velocity = Total distance travelled / Time taken

            = 60 + 60 / (30+20+ 10)

            =120 / 60

            = 2m/s

The average velocity of the particle is 2m/s
