A passage, when paraphrased, does not need citation as it has been rewritten.

Paraphrasing is the act of replacing words in a text or article so that it conveys the same meaning but does not amount to plagiarism. Citation is the verification required to ensure that a particular passage is not copied or plagiarised from another source. Most copyright documents list plagiarism as an act punishable by the law.

Paraphrasing is particularly useful when rewording certain texts that require the original idea to be conveyed without the exact usage of words. However, quotes, Latin phrases and scientific names are not considered as plagiarised phrases as long as due credit is given to the original authors or speakers.

There are several anti-plagiarism software available on the internet which cross-references texts from a wide range of articles.

A person writing a passage, even a paraphrased one, must cite the source even if he has paraphrased the same.

It is extremely important to give due credits to a person who has taken the efforts to write something which is of benefit to others.

Thus, every writer must either mention the original source in the paragraph itself, or add it later.
