If we measure the time of the day by the time the sun rises, it reaches the zenith and when it sets, moving towards the sun means all these things happen earlier than you would expect by just looking at your watch. The watch must, therefore, be gradually adjusted earlier if we want the sun to rise at 6 am and set at 6 pm.
For example, If you continue to set your watch over 24 hours earlier moving around the earth then you would come back to where you started one day before you left according to your watch. So we invent a point where, although the time of day is advanced, when you cross this line, the day itself is made one day later.
