A person has to walk 100 m to go from position X in the north of east direction to the position B and then to the west of Y to reach finally at position Z. The position Z is situated at the north of X and at a distance of 60 m from X. Find the distance between X and Y.

Solution :-

given that, total distance covered by person = 100 m and XZ is equal to 60 m .

So,

→ X - Y - Z = 100 m

→ XY + YZ = 100 m

let us assume that, xy is equal to x m .

then ,

→ YZ = (100 - x) m

now, in right angled ∆XZY,

→ XY² = XZ² + YZ² { By pythagoras theorem. }

→ x² = 60² + (100 - x)²

→ x² + 3600 + 10000 + x² - 200x

→ 200x = 13600

→ x = 68 m (Ans.)

Hence, the distance between X and Y is equal to 68 m .
