reaction time is the time taken to react to a situation...
here in this case .... the time that man took to react can be calculated as shown in the attachment....

just see....
here person applied brakes only after travelling 5m .... so here retardation starts only after 5m ... so you can apply these kinematic equation only after 5m...
mark the term "only after 5m"
