A person looking at a person wearing a shirt with a pattern comprising vertical and horizontal lines is able to see the vertical lines more distinctly than the horizontal ones. What is this defect due to? How is such a defect of vision corrected?

  • Astigmatism - in this refractive error the refraction varies in different meridian.

  • As the refraction varies in different meridian, patient is able to see in vertical plane distinctly but not in horizontal plane.

# Correction -

  • Astigmatism is corrected using cylindrical lens of appropriate focal length. Several surgeries are also possible, but used only as last resort of management.
