Let the total distance to be travelled be s and the exact time required to reach the destination be x.

Then we know that

Speed=Distance/Time

3=s/x+0.67 (As in this case the person has reached 40 mins late)

3x+2.01=s (1)

Similarly, 4x+2=s (2)

By (1) and (2),

3x+2.01=4x+2

4x-3x=2.01-2

x=0.01hr

Now putting the value of x in (2),

4(0.01)+2=s

0.04+2=s

s=2.04km

Hence,the required total distance is 2.04 km.
