Answer:

speed in still water=5 km/hr

Let speed of stream be x km/hr

speed upstream=(x+5) km/hr

speed downstream=(x-5) km/hr

distance=(40+40)km

time upstream=T 1

time downstream=T 2

T 1=40/(x+5)

T 2=40/(x-5)

T 2=3*T 1

40/(x-5)=3*40/(x+5)

40/(x-5)=120/(x+5)

on cross multiplying

40/120=(x-5)/(x+5)

1/3=(x-5)/(x+5)

on cross multiplying

x+5=3 x-15

15+5=3 x-x

20=2x

x=20/2

x=10

Speed of stream 10 km/hr
