Answer: Rs.6200

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Given, SP=Rs.4000.
  • Let the loss be Rs.x.
  • We know Loss=CP-SP

                     ⇒ x=CP-4000    eq(1)

  • If he sells the machine at Rs.5000 i.e., SP=Rs.5000 then he would have gained 2/3 of the previous loss.
  • According to question,

        gain=SP-CP

    ⇒\frac{2}{3}(x-4000)=5000-CP

   ⇒\frac{2}{3}(CP-4000-4000)=5000-CP

   ⇒2(CP-8000)=3(5000-CP)

   ⇒2CP-16000=15000-3CP

   ⇒2CP+3CP=15000+16000

   ⇒5CP=31000

   ⇒CP=\frac{31000}{5}

  ∴ CP=Rs.6200

  • Hence,the cost price of the machine is Rs.6200.
