Answer:

let the distance be x km

time taken with 4kmph=x/4hr=x*60/4 min

Allow time=15x-8 mins

similarly x/6 hr=60x/6=10x mins

so 15x-8=10x+8

5x=16

x=16/5 =3.2 km ans

Step-by-step explanation:

so Distance (D) = Speed (s) * Time (T)

the Distance to office - wont change - it will always be constant. And the amount of time he needs to be exactly on time is also a constant (T)

and we know if he walks 4KPH he gets there 8 minutes late - lets call that (T+8)

so 4* (T+8)= D or 4T+32=D

and we know if she walks 6KPH (women are always faster than men) she arrives 8 minutes early - lets call that (T-8) - can you see this coming?

so 6*(T-8) =D or 6T-48= D hmm- interesting, they both +D

sooo 4T+32=6T-48 if we subtract 4T from both sides of the equation we get

32=2T-48 now add 48 to both sides and we get 80=2T or T= 40 minutes

when he walked 4 KPH he was 8 minutes late- so 40+8 +48 or o.8 hours (you remembered to convert to hours, right?)

do get D we multiply Speed times time 4KPH*0.8 hours = 3.2 KM

checking the second equation - when she was 8 minutes early 40–8= 32 or .533 hours 6*.533= 3.2 km :)

Answer:

Let the distance covered by a person be 'x'

we know that time=distance/speed

    8 min late+8 min early=x/4*60 min - x/6*60 min

       16= 15x - 10x

       16=  5x

       x=16/5

       x= 3.2 km
