A piece of magnesium and a piece of charcoal is put in two separate beakers. To each (2)
beaker 5 mL of hydrochloric acid is added. A lit matchstick was brought close to the mouth
of the beakers. The burning matchstick extinguishes with a pop sound when placed over the
beaker with magnesium and acid but not when placed over the beaker with charcoal and acid.
What comparison can be drawn between magnesium and charcoal?

Answer:
Magnesium is a metal and hydrogen gas is evolved during reaction of metals with acids . Whereas charcol is a non metal that's why hydrogen gas is not evolved during reaction with acids.
Hydrogen gas burns with a pop up sound when a burning candle or splinter comes in contact with it. It is a light and colourless gas.
