Answer:

x = 60/7 or 8 4/7

Step-by-step explanation:

formula:

(The portion of the tank being filled per hour) * (time it takes to fill) = (whole tank filled)

solution:

(1/5 - 1/12)*x = 1

(7/60) * X = 1

x = 60/7 or 8 4/7 or approx. 8.571

Given : A pipe can alone fill a tank in 5 hours,

while a drain could do the contrary in 12 hours.

To Find : How long would it take the pipe to fill the tank if the drain was simultaneously opened during the duration of the filling job and if the tank were entirely emptied at the start

Solution:

A pipe can alone fill a tank in 5 hours,

=> pipe can fill in 1 hr  = 1/5

a drain could do empty in 12 hours

=> drain can empty in 1 hr = 1/12

Both together in 1 hr  = 1/5  - 1/12

= ( 12 - 5)/60

= 7/60

Both will fill completely  = 1/(7/60) = 60/7 hrs

= 8 4/7  hrs
