water filled per hour without leak=1/3 of tank
water filler per hour with leak=1/4 of tank
so the leak per hour= 1/3-1/4
=1/12 of tank.
so it will take 12 hours to empty the tank.

Answer:

The leak will take 12 hours to empty a full tank if the pipe is shut.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • A pipe can fill a tank in 3 hours.

In 1 hour it can fill 1/3 of the tank.

  • On account of a leak , it takes 1 more hour , i.e. 4 hours to fill.

Hence, in this situation , it can fill 1/4 of the tank in one hour.

So, in 1 hour the leak can empty (1/3 - 1/4)= 1/12 portion of the tank .

hence, to empty the tank completely , the leak will take 1/(1/12)=12 hours.
