When plant cells are placed in hypotonic solution, the plant cell takes in water by the process of osmosis.
Osmosis is the process by which solvent molecules pass through a semipermeable membrane(cell wall) from an area of high concentration to area of low concentration.
Since plant cell has less water than surrounding medium, it takes up water and swells up to the point that it remains swollen. It does not burst due to its cell wall and remains turgid.
