Poetry is part of that culture. It is art, participated in by the artists (poets), and by the public.

The poem is the primary expression of that art, as the painting and sculpture was the primary expression of visual art for thousands of years. That visual art dominance may be changing with the art of video so accessible during these times.

The poem, whether written, spoken, the tone poem, shared voice poetry on video, or newly created modern edda, and any other form, is the instant of poetic expression. It is the literary expression of our cultural experience and the central expression of our artistic language.

Rather than the story, or the novel, the poem seems to have been the first artistic expression of literary humanity; and it continues to be an important part of every culture.
