let the point where it broke be B.
the base be C.
the fallen top be A.
ABC form right triangle where angle c is 90.
AC is 5m.
BC is 12 m.
by pythagoras theorem,
AB2 = BC2 + AC2
AB2 = 12square + 5square
AB2 = 144 + 25
AB2 = 169
Ab = 13
total height of pole before breaking = 12m + 13m
=25m

Given:

A pole broken at apoint but did not separate. Its top touched the ground at the distance of 5 m from its base. The point where it broke is at height of 12m from the ground.

To Find:

What was the total height of the pole before it broke ?

Solution:

Let the point where it broke be B.

Let the base be C.

Let the fallen top be A.

Here,

ABC forms a right triangle where ∠C = 90°

AC = 5m.

BC = 12 m.

By pythagoras theorem,

AB² = BC² + AC

AB² = 12² + 5²

AB² = 144 + 25

AB² = 169

AB = 13

Total height of pole before breaking = 12m + 13m = 25m

Hence, the total height of the pole before it broke was 25m.
