Every atom has electrons.According to the octet rule, the outer shell (valence shell) must have 8 electrons. To satisfy the octet rule, the atoms seem to give or take electrons. Their tendency to give or take electrons gives them either a positive or negative charge. If an atom loses its electron, it is said to have a positive charge (cation) and if it gains one, it is said to have a negative charge (anion). These charged atoms of an element are called Ions
