An ionic compound is formed between metal and a non-metal.
Transfer of electrons take place.A metal donates electrons to non metal.
It is made up of ions
Example --> NaCl

A covalent compound is formed between a non-metal and another non-metal.
Sharing of electrons take place.
They are of 3 types -->
1) Single bond
2) Double bond
3) Triple bond

Example --> Na2O
