The main phenomenon which causes this is the REFRACTION of light. When light rays coming from the water emerge in air, they bend away from the normal,thus when this light enters our eye, the light appears to be coming from the direction of the refracted light.This is true for all the positions in the mirrorRefraction of light waves in water. Similar figure will be for the pond as well.The only difference being each small point of the pond instead of pencil...
