Given: A pot contains the mixture of 72 gram

To find: the weight of salt in the initial mixture.

Solution:

  • Now we have given that out of 72 grams, 18 gram is taken out and 18 gram fresh water is put in its place. Again 18 gram mixture is taken out and 18 gram fresh water is put into it.
  • Let p be the innitial percentage as a fraction.
  • Then:

            72p - 18p / 72 ..........the fraction of the resulting solution as salt.

  • Now for next 18 grams, we have:

            { 72 x (72p - 18p / 72) - 18 x (72p - 18p / 72) } / 72 = 5/100

            54(72p - 18p / 72) / 72 = 5/100

            3(72p - 18p / 72) / 4 = 5/100

            (72p - 18p / 72) = 5 x 4 / 100 x 3

            54p / 72 = 1/15

            3p/4 = 1/15

            p = 4/45

Answer:

         So the  innitial percentage is 4/45.
