A professional gambler reported that at the end of the first race at the track he had doubled his money. He bet $32 on the second race and tripled the money he came with. He bet $59 on the third race and quadrupled his original bankroll. He bet $84 on the fourth race and lost it, but still had $44 left. With how much money did he start?

let x he gamblled at first.
at end of first he doubled i.e 2x.
he bet 32 & get 96, i.e. profit=64
in third he bet 59 & get 59*4, i.e profit is 59*3=177
next he lost 84.

summing algebrically,
2x+48+177-84=44
x=

perhaps question is

4x-84=44
x=32

Given,

For the first time, he doubled his money

For the second time, he bet $32 and tripled his money

For the third time, he bet $59 and quadrupled his original bankroll

For the fourth time, he bet $84 and lost it

Money left = $44

To Find,

How much money did he start =?

Solution,

Let the initial money be x

After 1st race, total money = 2x

After 2nd race, total money = 32 * 3 = $96

Profit after 3rd race = 96 - 32 = $64

After 3rd race, total money = 59 * 4 = $236

Profit = 236 - 59 = $177

After 4th race, he lost = 84

Money left = 44

After 3rd race, he quadrupled his original bankroll ,

4x - 84 = 44

4x = 44 + 84

x = 128/4

x = 32

Hence, he started with $32.
