what is the difference between history and prehistory

Recorded history is a magnificent tapestry, but the closer one gets to the first wefts,the more fabric will have been consumed by the moths, leaving gaps in the picture about which we can only guess. Prehistory, on the other hand, is a tapestry we can only imagine, based on bits of moth-eaten threads that lay on the ground around a ruined loom.
