Given;-

     Masses are, = m & 3m

For the above given system, with 2 different masses and in a pulley system with negligible masses of strings, acceleration of centre of mass is given by the formula;  

        Acm = (m₂ - m₁)² g / (m₁ + m₂)²

So, by putting the given values in the question, we get;-

         Acm = (3m - m)₂ ×(-g) / (3m + m)²

         Acm = (2m)² ×(-g)/ (4m)²

         Acm = 4m² ×(-g) / 16m²

         Acm = - g/ 4
