Answer:

Distance = total distance travelled

= 2.1+7.4

= 9.5 metre

Displacement = final point-initial

= 7.4 - 2.1

= 5.3

Direction→ southward

because the southward distance is greater then northward hence direction will be southward.

The distance is 9.5 meters and the displacement is 5.3 meters in southward direction.

GIVEN

A quarterback pedals 2.1 meters northward and then runs 7.4 meters southward.

TO FIND

  • Distance moved
  • Magnitude and direction of the displacement.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

We know that distance of an object can be defined as the total measure of the path travelled to reach its final destination.

Let the starting point of the quarterback be 'O'

Distance travelled in Northward direction= OA = 2.1 meters

Distance travelled in southward direction = AB = 7.4 meters

Distance travelled = OA + AB = 2.1 + 7.4 = 9.5 meters

Displacement is defined as the shortest distance between the starting point in and the final point of the object.

Displacement = OA

Therefore,

OA = AB - OB = 7.4 - 2.1 = 5.3 meters

Direction = Southward direction.

Hence, The distance is 9.5 meters and the displacement is 5.3 meters in southward direction.
