Summary: This story is about a thief who gets a taste of his own medicine. Horace Danby can be termed as a thief with a difference. He steals only once in a year. He is fond of books and spends most of his booty on buying books. He plans meticulously before attempting a burglary. During his burglary attempt at a big house, he gathers all the necessary information and enters the house for stealing from the safe. He is cheated by a lady thief, who claims herself to be the owner of the house. Finally, Horace ends up in prison only to repent at the way he was deceived by a person from his own profession.

A Question of Trust by Victor Canning  is a story about a man named Horace Danby who used to build locks and he used to commit robberies every year. Once, when he goes to a house for robbery, he meets a woman who pretends to be the owner of the house. Later when he leaves from there and is arrested after 2-3 days, he comes to know the that the lady was thief and had tricked him into opening the safe.

Explanation:

  • The story is about a 50-year-old man who makes locks and stays with his housekeeper. He is a nice person, but not an honest man, because every year he commits a robbery. He planned his robberies so that he could purchase unusual and costly books with money from them for at least a year. Since he likes to read rare and costly books, he buys these books He's going to rob the Shotover Grange house.
  • The real twist in the story comes when he reaches the grange to commit a robbery and a woman pretending to be the wife of the owner enters.   She offers him an opportunity to forget that she had seen him trying to open the safe provided he does something for her. She  say she had forgotten the security code of the locker and she needs to go for a wedding and if Danby's cracks the safe she would allow him to go.
  • Horace Danby does not realize that he unlocks the safe for some robber because she isn't the actual owner of the property. He leaves satisfied that he is safe but does not realize he's opened the safe for someone else that too without wearing his gloves
  • Later on, as he leaves and after two or three days is arrested, he comes to learn of the lady's reality. He realizes he was tricked by a woman, who was herself a thief and with the same background as his. He is sent to the jail and becomes an assistant librarian. From then he get angry if someone talks about honour amongst thieves since he had been cheated by one from his own community
