Optical fibres are plastic fibres and working of optical fibres is based on the phenomenon of total internal reflection. These are hair-thin long strand of quality glass or quartz surrounded by glass coating of slightly lower refractive index and is used to transmit optical signal from one place to another.

Construction --> Made of core, cladding, and buffer coating.

There is no loss of intensity in total internal reflection the outcoming beam is of as much intensity as the incident beam.A bundle of optical fibres is known as light pipe.

Applications of fibres are used in medical and optical examination, and are used in transmitting and receiving electrical signals in telecommunication.
