A ray of light traveling in air falls on the surface of a rectangular slab of a plastic material whose refractive index is 1.6. If the incident ray makes an angle of 53° with the normal, find the angle made by the refracted ray with the normal (sin 53° = 4/5).

We know that refractive index of air is 1.

Here the incidence angle is (I)=53°

Using Snell's law

refractive index in air sin I =refractive index in glass sin r

sin 53°=1.6sin r

4/5=1.6sin r

=4/5×1.6

=1/2sin=30°
