A ray of light travels from medium I to medium II. The figure given shows the variation of sin of angles of incidence (sin i) in medium I with sin of angle of refraction (sin r) in medium II. Consider the following statements : (1) Speed of light in medium I>Speed of light in medium II. (ii) Speed of light in medium I 45° (iii) Light travels from denser medium to rarer medium. 3 Seins sin i Which of the statement given above is/are correct ? (A) (i) only (B) (ii) only (C) (i) and (iii) (D) (ii) and (iii) 19. A ray of light passes through a prism as shown in the figure given below: sin r

The correct statements are (C) (i) and (iii)

In the given graph,

The Y-axis represents Sin r and the X-axis represents Sin i.

So, the slope or, the tangent of the curve will be, tan θ = Sin r/ Sin i

And the angle θ is greater than 45°

∵  θ > 45°

∴ tan θ > tan 45°

⇒ tan θ > 1

⇒ Sin r/ Sin i > 1

⇒ Sin r > Sin i

⇒ r > i

So, the angle of incidence in  Medium II (r) is greater than the angle of incidence in Medium I (i).

Now, we know,

Angle of incidence of light in a medium ∝ 1/μ [μ = refractive index of that medium]

And, μ ∝ v [ v is the velocity of light in that medium]

So, v ∝ 1/ Angle of incidence of light in a medium

∴ (i) Speed of light in Medium I is greater than in Medium II is true.

As the angle of incident of light of Medium I is lesser, so the refractive index of the Medium I is greater than Medium II, and it is the denser medium.

Given, A ray of light travels from medium I to medium II.

So, (iii) Light travels from denser medium to rarer medium is true.

So, the correct statements are (C) (i) and (iii)
