Question :

A recipe calls for 3 cups of sugar and 8 cups of flour. If only 6 cups of flour are used, how many cups of sugar should be used?

Answer :

For 6 cups of flour, 2(1/4) cup of sugar is to be used.

Given :

3 cups of sugar is required for 8 cups of flour

To find :

No.of cups of sugar required for 6cups of flour

Solution :

For 8 cups of flour , no.of cups of sugar required = 3

Therefore, for 1 cup of flour , no.of cups of sugar required = 3/8

Hence, for 6 cups of flour , no.of cups of sugar to be used = 3/8 × 6

= 3/4 × 3

= 9/4

 = 2 \frac{1}{4}

Therefore, for 6 cups of flour, 2(1/4) cup of sugar is to be used.
