A reckless drunk is playing with a gun in an airplane that is going directly east at 500km/hr. The drunk shoots the gun straight up at the ceiling of the plane. The bullet leaves the gun at a speed of 1000km/hr. Relative to an observer on earth , what angle does the bullet make with the vertical?

Horizontal component of the bullet :  500 km/hr
Vertical component = 1000 kmph

Resultant velocity of the bullet:   √[500² + 1000²] = 500 √5 kmph

Angle made by the velocity of the bullet with vertical  = Ф

TanФ = 500/1000 = 1/2
Angle = Ф = Tan⁻¹ 1/2 = 26.56°

Answer:

Vb=1000km/h

Vp=500km/h

tan theeta = P/B

500/1000=1/2

tantheeta=1/2

Theeta =1/2tan^-1
