Let the length of the lawn be l.

The width will be :

l - 7

Area = Length × width

Area = l(l - 7) = l² - 7l

This equals to :

l² - 7l = 330

l² - 7l -330 = 0

The roots to this quadratic equation are :

-22 and 15

doing the substitution we have :

l² - 22l + 15 l - 330 = 0

l(l - 22) + 15(l -22) = 0

(l + 15)(l - 22) = 0

l = 22 or -15

We take the positive value.

So l = 22 cm

The  width  = 22 -7 = 15 cm

Length = 22 cm

Width = 15 cm
