An elderly couple were killed following a truck and car crash near Dubbo, in western NSW.

A 73-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car, was killed in the accident, which happened on Saturday afternoon on the Newell Highway, near Dubbo.

The car's 76-year-old driver was taken to hospital for treatment, but he died in the early hours of Sunday.

The truck's driver was not injured. He was taken hospital for blood and urine testing.

A woman has died following a crash between a car and truck in the state’s west.

Around 3.30pm Saturday 17 January 2014, police were called to the Newell Highway near Dubbo.

The passenger in the car, a 73-year-old woman, died at the scene, while the male driver, also aged in his 70s, suffered a number of injuries and was transported to Dubbo Base Hospital for treatment.

The male driver of the truck was not injured but has been taken to Dubbo Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner.

The Newell Highway remains closed in both directions. Southbound motorists are being diverted via Camp Road and Obley Road while northbound motorists can use the same roads in reverse.
