Given info : A rod of 120 cm long and of diameter 3 cm is subjected to an axial pull of 18 kN.

To find : The stress in N/mm² is ...

solution : base area of rod, A = πd²/4 , where d is diameter of rod.

here, d = 3cm = 30 mm

so, A = π(30)²/4 = 900π/4 = 225π mm²

Stress = force applied/base area

= 18kN/225π mm²

= (18 × 10³)/(225 × 3.14) N/mm²

= 25.47 N/mm²

Therefore the stress acts on the rod is 25.47 N/mm²
