A rod of length 4 m is suspended from two wires
as shown in figure. One of them is made of steel
and other of copper of cross-sectional area 10-2m2
and 4 x 10-2 m2. Find distance x if equal stress is
experienced by both the wires (Yes, = 2 x 1011 N/m2
and Y Copper = 1.1 x 1011 N/m2

Answer:

3.2m.

Explanation:

If we let the rod is having a point x on the line of the rod where equal stress is experienced by both of the wires. So, we know from the rotational motion that the force experienced by one arm will be equal to the other. Force experienced by steel wire is Fs and of Copper wire is Fc.

Hence, Fs*x=Fc*(L-x)

Or, Fs/Fc=(L-x)/x.

Since, in the question it is given that the stress will be same so,

Fs/Fc=As/Ac(Where A is the area of cross-section).

(L-x)/x=As/Ac.

(L-x)/x=10^-2/4*10^-2 which is equal to L-x=1/4*x.

Which on solving we will get the value of x=4/5L.

Since, the value of L is 4m Hence, 16/5 or 3.2 m.
